mindfulness based cognitive therapy 8 week course.

bringing mindfulness to life
Overview:
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week course approved by national health guidelines for people who are experiencing mild to moderate depression or have experienced depression in the past.  MBCT combines mindfulness meditation with elements from cognitive-behavioural therapy to help change the way we meet negative thought patterns and behavioural avoidance that are characteristic of depression.

About the Course:
Mindfulness meditation is at the heart of the MBCT course and draws from the structure of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s pioneering Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme.  Mindfulness encourages us to be aware of what is happening in the present moment and to turn with kindness towards what is arising.   The course is experiential and cultivates an understanding of general human vulnerability, particularly vulnerability to depression.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offers a theoretical framework, and together with mindfulness, we learn to relate to our thinking process rather than from the contents of our thoughts.

The key learning points include:
  • Learning to step out from unhelpful, ruminative thoughts
  • Cultivating an awareness of the present moment through mindfulness practices
  • Recognising the tendency to be on ‘auto-pilot’ and developing a more mindful mode of being
  • Turning towards our experiences with interest, kindness and compassion
  • Learning to relate to emotional challenges and difficulty from a fresh perspective
Course Format:
MBCT is a group-based programme that runs over 8 weeks with an extra week of practice between sessions 6 and 7.  Usually, the session will commence with a guided practice such as a Body Scan, Mindful Movement or a Sitting Practice, with time afterwards to explore and reflect on the practice.  There is space to review the previous week’s home practice and learn how to incorporate mindfulness in everyday life.  Stories and poetry may be read out to help draw out the theme from each session.  Time is given at the end of the session to set out the home practice schedule for that week.  Participants will not be asked to share their personal stories in the group.

Course Materials:
Participants will receive a range of materials to support their learning, including course handouts, guided meditation recordings, and recommended reading to underpin the techniques introduced in the sessions.
