mindful parenting 8 week course.bringing mindfulness to life |
|
Overview:
Mindful Parenting is an 8-week evidence-based course offering participants the opportunity to explore their experience of being (or becoming) a parent. It has a large body of research supporting its effectiveness with parents at all stages of the parenting journey (including grandparents). It has a particular strong evidence base in working with parents who are parenting neurodivergent children and/or are neuro divergent themselves and the extra joys and challenges that this can bring. About: Mindfulness meditation is at the heart of the Mindful Parenting course and draws from the structure of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s pioneering Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme. Mindfulness encourages us to be aware of what is happening in the present moment and to turn with kindness towards what is arising. Mindful Parenting teaches participants how to be present for the joyful moments and how to navigate, with self-compassion, the challenging moments. The course is experiential and through exploring mindfulness practices and psychological models, cultivates an understanding and awareness of parenting patterns (often inherited from our own parents/caregivers). The course has proven to improve attachment between a parent and child which has a direct impact on their social and emotional development. |
The key learning points include:
- Learning to direct attention in order to be present.
- Develop practical skills in how to navigate difficult or stressful communications.
- Cultivating a sense of self-compassion and care around ours and others intense emotions.
- Exploring our own ‘inner child’ and how they may influence our parenting style and relationships.
- Learning to bring a different perspective which can improve well-being and psychological health.
Course Format:
Mindful Parenting is a group-based programme that runs over 8 weeks with opportunities to practice at home between sessions. The sessions are held either online via Zoom or in person (check for specific courses) in groups of between 6 and 12 participants. Each session is 2 hours long with a short comfort break. Your teacher will be contactable before, during and after the sessions to offer continuous support and guidance so you get the most out of the course. The course is not therapy and therefore there is no requirement to share any personal information unless you choose to. There is limited equipment needed other than a computer for online courses, a blanket and a water bottle. Audio recordings are shared each week and a smart phone or tablet it useful to be able to access these recordings.
Course Materials:
Participants will receive a range of materials to support their learning, including course handouts, guided meditation recordings, and recommended reading to underpin the techniques introduced in the sessions.
